What is OSDP?
The Open Supervised Device Protocol is an open standard for how card readers and other peripherals talk to access control panels.
In short
OSDP was developed by the Security Industry Association (SIA) as an interoperable alternative to older one-way reader protocols such as Wiegand. It was adopted as an international standard, IEC 60839-11-5, in 2020.
- Two-way communication between reader and controller, so the panel can send commands (for example LED or buzzer control) and the reader can report its status.
- Supervision: the controller continuously polls devices, so a disconnected or tampered reader is detected.
- Secure Channel: OSDP defines an encrypted mode using AES-128.
- Interoperability: devices from different manufacturers that implement the standard can work together; SIA runs a verified-device programme.
OSDP and UniiD
The UniiD IoT Dashboard “Supports OSDP compatible devices”, and UniiD Identities was described as open and vendor-agnostic.
